My name is Trish and I just started today as an English coach at the Canterbury House.
A few things about me: I'm a fourth-year studying Communication and Culture at Michigan Tech--graduating in the spring, Yikes!  I learned to snow ski when I was two years old and playing in the snow is one of my favorite things to do.  I'm also studying for a minor in Theatre Entertainment which provides a great outlet for my love of musical theatre.  I just had my first coaching session today and it has made me all the more excited to start spending time here--thank you, Neely, for getting me involved!

Today we decorated the house  for our Halloween party tomorrow.,,, YAY :) .... From 2pm on...  We'll be carving pumpkins, making spooky ghost  suckers, eating candy!  and other fun stuff.  Don't forget to wear a costume.!  We are hoping you'll come and bring your children along for this event, and also a hot chili dinner afterward at  6 . (Wed. 10/28)    Last week was great also...for Hispanic heritage month, the campus group  Nosotros had events here Tues and Thur , where they prepared food and played board games  in Spanish for practice, played music and enjoyed the fireplace.  Sooo..much fun.

p.s.  Our appointment board is full!  So we are opening on Thursdays from 2-5 , starting this week.
also, some of our students have agreed to teach their native languages, and there are sign-up sheets on the board...so far we have Chinese, hoping for Hindi, Korean, Spanish and more!   Is this great or  what?  Come sign up!

I love this place

Hi.
My name is Mare Mueller. I am fortunate enough to spend two hours a week in the Canterbury House. I wish I could spend more time here but my I also want to pass my classes and take care of my dog, so I must spend time with my dog, walking him, feeding him and I also have to study.

I love it here because I am able to meet really nice people who teach me so much about themselves and their cultures. I am from Michigan and have lived in this state for most of my life. But my new friends are not from Michigan, are not even from the United States. Also, my new friends are so happy to learn. I too love to learn. I have such a big curiosity that I constantly have questions to ask and answers to find.

It is beautiful inside this place. It is quiet and clean, there are snacks, and the noises I hear are clicking of keyboard keys and chatting of students. I hear laughter and understanding. I can hear and feel love.

I have worked at the Canterbury House for many weeks now and I have learned that a great deal about the cultures from Russia, China, and Thailand. I have never been introduced to these cultures and the people here are more than willing to talk about their hometowns and their countries. It is an enjoyable setting to relax and learn about different cultures, while helping other people learn the English language. It is a great experience that everybody should be a part of. If you have any time you should definitely stop by and check it out, especially if you are interested in learning about cultures that are different from yours.
